What is a Libertine....
We live in a world where everyday thought isn't exactly what you'd call "Greecian." No American philosophers are treading the scene (and no scene kids, not your scene) today, spreading the good word of...whatever. You might even say that philosophy is dead.
Thus births the libertine.
I'm not claiming philosophical standards, in fact, I just use the clever introduction about the anti-philosophy of America to make myself seem liberal and cool. I'm neither of those things.
But I'm not conservative and uncool either.
But those are the only two combinations for your standard American. We come prepackaged for your convenience with our personal bag of stereotypes and a comb three times the size of our heads. Don't give us to your daughters or we'll be bald and/or naked in the time it takes atoms to crash back into one another (but with much less radiation).
As an American, I do however claim to think, and to do so freely. I'd like to take a moment to do the most cliche blog "thing" one can do. *whips out his oversized online dictionary from the glorious dictionary.com*

Hmmm...really?
I think it says alot about the American fiber (as well as the fiber of those who came up with this word), that "freethinker" is akin to "without moral restraint" in this. Granted, they rest on two different lines in the definition (hint, the 1 and 2 seperate meanings), but in America, those two things seem to be as evil as the other.
Freethinking is moral degredation.
This is what we're telling our kids.
It's not any different than what we've been telling our kids (which, btw, I don't have any) since the protestant days. These are good, those are bad, and never the twain shall meet. Or something like that. We leave no room for greys are greens or, god forbid, purples and pinks.
The world seems to be so flat in perspective. It's amazing Columbus made it to America at all. The future American parents anti-round-earth views should have had him plunging into the abyss long before he set foot in exotic Cuba...or wherever he conquested.
We're apparently not alone in our "closed-mindedness." I don't really have emperical evidence to back that up, but I'm sure America isn't the only country that has birthed a culture of...dare I say lies?
And apparently I'm correct. Thanks to the wonder of Google search, we find "Australian" +closed-minded to render several websites, all with an "Ode to Australia" proclaiming the joys and faults of that great nation.
"Even though we might seem a racist, closed-minded, sports-obsessed little people, at least we feel better for it." ~ You can read it all here
So at least the Aussie's are with us.
And I guess that's something.
It's amazing how thinking of things gets you off track. Not that I really had a track to being with.
So, I'd like to formally welcome you to the Last Libertine your source for this. Look forward to a few great links following every blog of what I found interesting on the net that day, and especially what has sparked my verbosity enough to write about. If you didn't like today's topic, wait till tomorrow...it could be politics, religion, the nutrional value of cat piss, you never know.
And they'll always be plenty of moral degredation in our world of naked barbies, so I should never run out of material.
If have any comments or questions, feel free to e-mail me. Also, send me a keyword to search on google and I'll take all the fun out of searching and give you the best possible link choice for that word.
Just saving you time....and money.
